Ike and the Eye Infection

About three days ago, Ike Buddy started acting like his mouth was sore and we saw a little blood on him when he brushed up against someones pants after he had been playing with another dog.  Then on Saturday he started to swell around his right eye, until it was almost swelled shut!  We couldnt find anything that looked like it could have caused that so off to the Vet we went!

Of Course on a Sunday...... the best of all days for a Vet emergency!  And...... TaDa!  It snowed about 3" last night to make the roads just delightful!  This is Ike's favorite riding in the car spot  - between the door frame and the headrest and resting his chin on your shoulder.

ONce in the Vet exam room he really started to worry!  He knows the drill, bt he is a very good boy here - no Naughty Ike at the Vet!

You can see the swelling better in the top picture, but he is pretty lethargic - at least for him!  It was determined that he had a Peri Orbital Abscess probably caused by chewing on a stick or bone or a TV remote and it poked a hole in the back of his gums and let infection get in where it could go up by his eye!  Yikes!  He chews lots of stuff and drags logs around the yard!

This was earlier in the summer time, but this is an example of what kind of stuff he is into - log wise!

Afterwards - thankfully they didnt have to cut him open and he didnt have a cone of shame, but he had been sedated and he was a caution to get into the car!  He weighs 120 pounds right now! Luckily there was a burly guy at the Vet office who helped me get him out of the Vet and in the car!  On the way home, he somehow got jacked up in the door handle with one of his giant paws and rolled the window down and couldnt get out!  I had to pull off the highway and into a parking lot, open three of the 4 car doors, and get him back on the seat without him breaking his own leg in the door handle and without him getting himself wedged between the front and back seats!  The whole time he was vociferously letting me know what he thought of the whole thing!  He's a howler when he is all drugged up and sore and not sure what is happening!

This is as far as we got into the house with him before he collapsed in a heap and cryed himself to sleep there!  Wedged in between the fridge and the counter right inside the entry way!

Brix was so worried about him of course!  After he got him some cookies....  He is not a fan of Ike being injured either!  Ike tried to have the "zoomies" at one point but he was just so wobbly that he had to keep sitting down and then would collapse where ever he was in the house!  Halfway down the short steps, halfway on the dog bed, you get the picture!  I did not get pictures of that part!

Nap change!  He decided to move over to where the floor is the warmest!  Right in front of the oven and the sink, where the in floor heat comes up!  He is now somewhat unhappily recovering from his whole ordeal, with lots of medicines that he has to take with food but his mouth is too sore to eat anything!  He has pretty much continuously cried since he came around and isnt so drunk on the sedation!  He hasnt wanted to eat or drink anything, but he is like every two year old and he gets bored of laying around.  He would like to play, but Im pretty sure he sees two of Brix right now, and he is Hangry!   But the swelling has already subsided some from the meds they gave him at the Vet, and he was able to eat a little bit of his rice, broth and eggs tonight. Im sure he will be back up and literally running in no time!

I hope that you have a good Vet when you need it, even on a Sunday with crappy roads and a Giant Dog to contend with!  Stay tuned for more adventures with Ike soon!  Blessed Be!
